Is It Time to Schedule an Endoscopy?

Your stomach has been hurting all week, and simple over-the-counter medications do not seem to offer much help. When you finally make it into the gastroenterologist, you learn that certain types of abdominal or intestinal pain may indicate a variety of digestive issues, so an endoscopy is required to determine the cause of your pain.

At New York Gastroenterology & Endoscopy, Dr. Khorshidi is skilled in both diagnostic and advanced endoscopic procedures. Our expert team can even perform endoscopies in-office so you do not have to seek treatment elsewhere. Not only can we diagnose abdominal and intestinal problems with or without surgery (depending on the situation), but our effective treatments and excellent follow-up care are the best in Queens.

What Is an Endoscopy?

An endoscopy is a nonsurgical procedure that is used to examine a person’s digestive tract. The term endoscopy literally means looking inside, so the procedure refers to looking inside the body for medical reasons using an endoscope. An endoscope usually consists of a rigid or flexible tube with a light delivery system, a lens, and an eyepiece, all of which work together to allow gastroenterologists to view internal organs and vessels in your body without making large incisions. Unlike most medical imaging techniques, endoscopes are inserted directly into the organ to determine the cause of medical conditions.

Doctors Often Recommend an Endoscopic Examination to Evaluate:

Stomach pain
Bleeding in the digestive tract
Ulcers
Gastritis
Difficulty swallowing
Polyps or growths in the colon
Constipation
Diarrhea

Types of Endoscopic Procedures

There are several types of endoscopic procedures used to diagnose conditions in different parts of the body.

Upper Endoscopy

An endoscope is inserted through the mouth and throat into the esophagus. From there, the doctor can easily view the esophagus, stomach, and upper part of the small intestine.

Sigmoidoscopy or Colonoscopy

To view the colon, an endoscope is passed through the rectum and directly into the large intestine.

ERCP

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreaticography uses a special endoscope to diagnose diseases of the gallbladder, biliary system, pancreas, and liver.

Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)

By combining an upper endoscopy and an ultrasound examination, a doctor can obtain images and other information about various parts of the digestive tract.

What to Expect During an Endoscopic Examination

During an endoscopy, you will be asked to lie down on your back or side. Monitors will be attached to your body and you may receive a sedative medication via an IV. The doctor may spray an anesthetic in your mouth (upper endoscopy) or draw your knees to your chest (colonoscopy) before inserting the endoscope. Gentle air pressure may be used to inflate your digestive tract and special surgical tools may be inserted through the endoscope to collect tissue samples or remove polyps. A typical upper endoscopy takes 15-30 minutes and a typical colonoscopy takes 20-60 minutes.
