Understanding Colon Cancer and Digestive Diseases

Endoscopia Colonoscopia Gastroenterologia Gastroenterologo Gastrologist GI Doctor Gastroenterologist

  • Colon cancer is highly preventable, but some people are taking the step to get screened. Screening can save your life, so let’s join together and get people checked!

  • Heartburn occurs when stomach acid seeps out of your stomach and moves up into the esophagus, your swallowing tube. That's why it feels like burning in your chest. Any food that increases acid can produce heartburn. So can foods that relax the muscle that controls flow between the stomach and esophagus. That circular band of muscle is the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Avoiding the most common offenders can help you avoid heartburn.

  • Colorectal Cancer affects an equal number of men and women. Many women, however, think of Colon Cancer as a disease only affecting men and might be unaware of important information about screening and preventing colorectal cancer that could save their lives.

  • Beginning at age 50, all men and women should be screened for colorectal cancer EVEN IF THEY ARE EXPERIENCING NO PROBLEMS OR SYMPTOMS.

  • A colonoscopy screening exam is almost always done on an outpatient basis. A mild sedative is usually given before the procedure and then a flexible, slender tube is inserted into the rectum to look inside the colon. The test is safe and the procedure itself typically takes less than 30 minutes.

  • Colorectal Cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. After lung cancer, colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the US. Annually, approximately 150,000 new cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed in the US and 50,000 people die from the disease. It has been estimated that increased awareness and screening would save at least 30,000 lives each year.

  • Tests used for screening for colon cancer include flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy. These tests are used to screen for colorectal cancer even before there are symptoms. Beginning at age 50, men and women should have a flexible sigmoidoscopy or complete colonoscopy every 5 years. Note: You may need to begin screening sooner if you have a personal or family history of colorectal cancer, polyps, or long-standing ulcerative colitis.
