WHAT IS AN ENDOSCOPY?
An endoscopy is a nonsurgical procedure that is used to examine a person’s digestive tract. The term endoscopy literally means looking inside, so the procedure refers to looking inside the body for medical reasons using an endoscope. An endoscope usually consists of a rigid or flexible tube with a light delivery system, a lens, and an eyepiece, all of which work together to allow gastroenterologists to view internal organs and vessels in your body without making large incisions. Unlike most medical imaging techniques, endoscopes are inserted directly into the organ to determine the cause of medical conditions.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING AN ENDOSCOPIC EXAMINATION:
During an endoscopy, you will be asked to lie down on your back or side. Monitors will be attached to your body and you may receive a sedative medication via an IV. The doctor may spray an anesthetic in your mouth (upper endoscopy) or draw your knees to your chest (colonoscopy) before inserting the endoscope. Gentle air pressure may be used to inflate your digestive tract and special surgical tools may be inserted through the endoscope to collect tissue samples or remove polyps. A typical upper endoscopy takes 15-30 minutes and a typical colonoscopy takes 20-60 minutes.
